2009 Annual AHDI Tidewater Symposium Report

Virginia Beach, Virginia

The Annual AHDI-TC Symposium was held on Saturday, May 2, 2009, and we were pleased to welcome our attendees to a day of learning and fun.

Medical Transcriptionists Networking

Speakers for the day included:

Dr. Jennifer Krup
“RejuninAge Bioidentical Hormones”

Denise Allard
“The Latest on HIPAA and Risk Management Issues”

Jeffrey D. Kins
“An Overview of Interventional Radiology”

Aurelia Guertin
“Aurelia and the Bee”

Harriet Stewart, CMT, AHDI-F
“They’re Implementing an EHR – Now What?”

All of the speakers offered great information, including a summary of the latest privacy restrictions in The American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009. We learned about the HITECH Act and had great fun in our first-ever spelling bee! Boy, those words were hard, Aurelia! We learned all about our hormones and what they do for us, reviewed EHR implementation tips for MTs, and learned of the vast number of procedures handled in the Interventional Radiology department. We even got to see actual instruments used in the department.

We were also pleased to have two first-time attendees - Barbara Almas and Kelly Chamberlain, as well as two students – Stephanie Joyner and Venita Perry.

We were fortunate to have in attendance our state delegate, Anne Malloy, CMT, and Harriet Stewart, CMT, AHDI-F, our AHDI Board Partner. Anne came all the way from upstate New York for our meeting and Harriet traveled from Northern Virginia to be with us for the day. At lunchtime, Anne and Harriet gave updates on state and national activities.

Diane Short, CMT, made a 3-hour trip from Delaware to attend the meeting as well. Thanks for your support, Diane!

All enjoyed breakfast and lunch catered by Panera Bread Company and everyone went away with 3 door prizes each. As a fundraiser for the Chapter, we held a silent auction for some very nice items. In addition, we had used books on sale for $2 and $3 each. Our 50/50 drawing was held at the end of the day and a lucky member went home with half of the proceeds!

The Chapter appreciated Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital allowing us to use the Health Education Center free of charge. In addition, we thank Merck/Scherling Plough Pharmaceuticals for sponsoring our delicious refreshments, and Bon Secours Heath System, Inc., for the donation of gift cards for our speakers. We are grateful for the support of our sponsors who helped make our Symposium a great success!
