The 2009 NoVA-AHDI Symposium Report

Cherry Blossoms near Arlington

Northern Virginia Chapter – AHDI
Annual Symposium
March 28, 2009

On March 28, the Northern Virginia Chapter – AHDI held its annual symposium at the Physicians’ Conference Center at INOVA Fairfax Hospital. Those present earned 5 CE credits.

Our first speaker was Joshua Smith of the Fairfax County Health Department whose presentation was about diseases carried by ticks and mosquitoes. We learned how to identify several of these villains and methods to avoid being bitten by them and what symptoms to look for once they do bite.

Next our transcription knowledge and skills were “challenged” by Carol Croft with “MT Mega Challenge.”

Our third speaker was Harriet Stewart who presented information on using the internet for medical transcription information, how to determine if a website is reliable or unreliable. She also gave a brief explanation of the products offered via Benchmark KB, one of the most valuable being the directory of physicians.

After lunch Rosalie Mehlman spoke to us concerning the technology of speech recognition and assured us that although it is here to stay, the skills of the medical transcriptionist will continue to be necessary for an accurate record.

Jonathan Adams’ presentation gave an overview of what has been happening with the stock market and strategies for individuals to deal with the stock market.

Our silent book auction at the end of the day was a success. We had many, many books donated and some of then were sold for $1.00. Door prizes were presented to all present and our traditional 50/50 drawing was won by Kitty O’Hara.
