NoVA-AHDI Chapter Meeting

May 30, 2009

Jefferson Memorial in Charlottesville, VA

What’s going on with the Northern Virginia Chapter –AHDI?

On May 30, 2009 the Northern Virginia Chapter - AHDI held a chapter meeting at INOVA Alexandria Hospital for its members. The chapter meeting had 10 members present.

The first speaker was LaShanya Washington of the Washington Regional Transplant Community, who gave a PowerPoint presentation concerning organ and tissue transplants. LaShanya's presentation was very informative, and attendees learned much about organ and tissue transplants, including the fact that 32,000 transplants were performed last year nationally. There are 6 transplant centers in northern Virginia. Only 1 in 100 people will pass in such a way they can become an organ donor. An organ donor has to be on a ventilator, but a tissue donor does not. In Virginia, 2 doctors must declare death; one must be a neuroscientist. To become an organ and/or tissue donor is to give the gift of life. WRTC does an invaluable service in coordinating these gifts.

After a break, President Anne Malloy talked about the upcoming Advocacy Summit in Arlington/Washington, DC. The Virginia delegation (consisting of Anne Malloy, Harriet Stewart, Diane Warth, and Sue Oakes) will be meeting with staff members in both Senators Mark Warner and Jim Webb’s office as well as staff members of Virginia Congressmen. She went over the talking points as outlined by AHDI for use at the meeting. She explained that one of these talking points is to tell the legislators who AHDI and MTIA are and what medical transcriptionists do, to tell them how many MTs there are (approximately 300,000), to let them know how MTs can contribute their expertise to EHR adoption and how our legislators can support us.

We also want the legislators to sponsor or support legislation that would allocate funding to workforce development in allied health, specifically to those organizations and programs whose roles link directly to HER adoption and integration.

Chapter member and AHDI board member Harriet Stewart brought her laptop and her printer and printed up letters for each person present who wanted to send a letter to the legislators. Each letter was personally signed and given to Anne and Harriet to deliver to the legislators during their appointments.

Certificates were distributed to those present for 1 CM and 1 PD credit.
