The Mountain Empire Chapter of Virginia Medical Transcriptionists (VAHDI)
The Mountain Empire Chapter of Virginia medical transcriptionists was formed in 1987, under the active guidance of Geanna Walker, ART, CMT, who was seeking a chapter close enough for medical transcriptionists in this area to attend. She had found that there were three other active chapters in Virginia, but distance hampered membership, or at least attendance of meetings, in these chapters. After canvassing the surrounding area, it was found that there were 14 transcriptionists who were interested in forming a chapter The first meeting was held on September 19, 1987, with 11 members and visitors present. The new chapter's first symposium was held in May of 1988, with an awards banquet being held on Friday night and then the symposium on the following day. Although the Mountain Empire Chapter is "clear across the state" from the other chapters in Virginia, the chapter members are still able to enjoy a sense of closeness that is always a part of AHDI. The Mountain Empire Chapter always meets on the 3rd Saturday in March, June and September, and the 2nd Saturday in November.
